Welcome to my Avengers recaps! Whoop whoop! There isn't going to be a consistent timeline for these, since there's a lot of ground to cover, and I haven't decided how to handle the series' yet. Episode by episode? In bunches? We'll have to see how much ground I feel like I can cover. In any case, we're starting with a movie, so here we go!
In Captain America: The First Avenger, we meet Steve Rogers for the first time. He's a scrawny kid from Brooklyn who wants to fight for his country in World War II. And the Army keeps rejecting him, but he keeps trying and trying to join. His best friend Bucky is headed overseas, and Steve wants to join him, wants to fight with him, wants his life to mean something. On his... gosh, umpteenth attempt to join with a recruiter, he meets a doctor who tells him that he can join. That he's going to be part of something great. And Steve agrees.
After struggling through boot camp, they finally do the experiment. Steve gets injected with some... chemicals, and then put into like, an iron lung, where he starts screaming and yelling and there's all this blue light and then it stops and he comes out looking like the Chris Evans we know and love (and love to look at). Then a Hydra infiltrator shoots the doctor and shit goes to hell and Steve is told that, as the only experiment, he can't do anything except be Captain America on stage.
Well, you think Steve is going to settle for that for the whole movie? I THINK NOT. But I'm going to treat these like book reviews and NOT give away the endings!
3 Things I Loved
PEGGY. My goodness, I love Peggy Carter. She's the freaking best. She's a badass, but she has feelings that she isn't afraid to show, and I just love everything about her. (Spoilerrrr! Agent Carter is one of my favorite Marvel entities of all time.)
Bucky. SPOILER ALERT! Bucky's death affected me more than almost any other in the Marvel Universe. Don't even try to change my mind.
Steve. Honestly, Captain America is probably the most white bread of all the characters in the Marvel Universe, but he's got a good heart. And you know, the house don't fall if the bones are good.
Dislikes/Problematic Content
Well. Obviously there are actual Nazis in this movie, so there's that. But aside from most of the characters behind super white, and the straightest of all time, there isn't a lot of actual problematic content in this one. I was looking for it too.
Was there anything I missed?
Rating
Rating scale:
Red = DNF, I hated everything
Orange = Ugh, no thank you
Yellow = I mean, I’ve seen worse, but there were problems
Green = This was good!
Blue = Oh my gosh, I loved this movie/show!
Purple = This is the unicorn of movies/shows and I will be rewatching it until Disney+ starts asking questions and EVERYONE should be watching it!
Of the Captain America-centric movies, I think I like this one the best? I guess my mind could end up being changed as I watch/rewatch. But it wasn't great. Just good. So I'm giving Captain America: The First Avenger a GREEN rating. There is more goodness to come, I know that much.
Higher, further, faster, baby.
